Curriculum

Appendix A and B are both from the same unit.  For this unit New Arrivals, students who have been in the country for less then 6 months, learned the five senses by reading a poem and discussing the meanings of the words and the senses.   Each lesson included a hands-on activity that focused on the sense for that day.  At the beginning of each lesson, words from the story were displayed on the overhead projector and the meanings of the words were discussed.

Appendix C is a sample from the Unit plan on whales.  The entire second grade was studying whales and the ocean.  I took the idea and ran with it for the ELL students, while focusing on vocabulary to help them understand the meaning.   Each day different whales were discussed, using the overhead projector to display images and words related to each whale.  The students then made a whale book, by researching a whale using the Internet.

In this district/classroom, I was extremely limited on my technology (hence only 2 types). The students were able to do research using a mobile laptop cart. For the senses unit, sounds were made by using an app on my iPhone that projected audio clips of different things i.e. airplanes, alarm clocks, etc.
