EDU 582- Teaching Exceptional Children

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Exploration of approaches to teaching students with exceptionalities will be presented. Strategies for meeting the diverse needs of students in general education will be demonstrated and explored.

This class focused on educating special education students in a mainstream classrooms.  This lesson plan (Appendix N) focuses on differentiating the lesson to meet the needs of the students who require accommodations.

As part of this class, we were required to observe a special education and general education classroom, or a co-teaching classroom.  I observed both a special education and a general education classroom because my district does not have co-teaching.  My observation is very drastic in terms of teaching style and students with disabilities.  Both classrooms were drastically different, but it was refreshing to see how the teachers handled their different situations.

For our final report (Appendix P) we were required to either pick a disability or write about ASD in the classroom.  I chose to write about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) because I have substituted in special education classrooms and I thought learning more about the strategies would help me to understand and instruct the students better.
